The White House said it backed legislation introduced on Tuesday by a dozen US senators to give the administration new powers to ban the Chinese-owned video app and other foreign-based technologies if they pose national security threats. TikTok has over 100 million users in the States, with the app under increasing fire over fears user data could end up in the hands of the Chinese government, undermining western security interests (in theory, in China's political setup, there's no real division between a 'private' company and the Communist Party). TikTok’s chief exec, Shou Zi Chew, is due to appear before Congress on 23rd of this month.
