This pathway will not take away creativity from the Songwriter, but will add extra dimensions to your own style. At levels 4 and 5 students are encouraged to write outside of their comfort zone, with a real focus on the individual Songwriter’s own personal style at level 6.

Aims of the module

Level 4

This module aims to give students a broad knowledge of ‘the song’ in contemporary popular music. Through a study of key writers, writing partnerships and seminal works, the module will equip students with tools to compose original works and investigate key songs produced since the advent of the popular music industry

Level 5

Building on knowledge gained in Composition, Arranging and Analysis 1, Harmony and Theory 1 and Songwriting 1, this module aims to develop students’ critical understanding of more sophisticated concepts in music, literature and the broader notion of art, empathy and the aesthetic. Students will be required to develop a proactive approach to writing in order to meet appropriate standards, commercial deadlines and the demands of the profession. The module will prepare students for Songwriting 3 where they will have to take their wider reference and individuality and use it to innovate within much tighter commercial and genre-based conventions.

Level 6

Through the analysis and writing of commercial song, this modules aims to help students refine their ideas, approaches and develop their unique voice. This practical approach aims to enable students to work effectively under complex commercial pressures and navigate the ambiguities and challenges inherent in the music industry.

Entry Requirements

Pre-requisites for taking the module

  • Some basic chordal ability on Guitar or Piano at level 4, with some previous Song writing experience being preferable.
  • Some programming skills, as students are asked to produce demo recordings for their assignments. If students have had no programming skills, if would be essential that they also take the level 4 Music Programming module.

At level 5

  • A decent understanding of the stylistic concepts of Song writing in different genres, as all students will be asked to write outside of their comfort zone.
  • A functional understanding of Major and minor diatonic harmony.
  • All students must have good basic music programming skills
  • An understanding of lyrical phrasing and metre
  • The ability to create critical thinking in regard to lyrical content, that goes beyond just the commercial.

At level 6

  • The ability to do all of the above to a more advanced standard, with the emphasis being on developing what the students have learnt in Years 1 and 2
  • NB: This module at level 6 really focuses on students individual Song writing careers, as they need to produce a Personal Industry plan and portfolio with more songs needing to be written than at levels 4 and 5. There is also a real emphasis on sticking to tight deadlines as would be expected in the real world.
