Choosing a place to live while in college is just as important as your choosing the right college to study in. While LCCM does not offer campus living, we aim to provide detailed guidance on finding accommodations in the private sector.

Where to live

Accommodation in Central London is generally expensive and difficult to come by, however, some of our students have managed suitable places suitable to their needs. Students usually find a place in the outlying areas where accommodation is cheaper and more plentiful. Often Travel Zones 2 and 3 are much nicer places to live - less polluted, greener spaces and with their own community “vibe”.

The basis of your decision may depend on the following three factors:

Good Transport Links
  • We recommend you start looking for areas that have a direct transport link to London Bridge, Waterloo, Southwark, Borough or Elephant & Castle stations
(SE1 postcode), as these are all only a few minutes walk from LCCM.
  • You may want to aim for Zones 2 or 3 - many students are able to travel into College from Travel Zones 2 and 3 in anything between 20 and 45 minutes.
  • The Tube is the most regular transport link into the centre - they run every few minutes - but there are also some other very good overground train links to
Waterloo and London Bridge Rail Stations.
  • Student discounts are available through Transport for London. You can apply for a Student Oyster through the TFL website:
  • The cost of living in London varies a great deal depending upon the type of area and accommodation.
  • The main advantage of living further from the centre is that price will be cheaper. The difference in weekly rents for similar properties between Travel
Zone 1 and Travel Zone 3 can greatly outweigh the difference in travel costs.
  • It is probably cheaper to live south of the river or in east London than it is to live in West London - rents in the West tend to be much more expensive.
  • London, as a big city, is not exempt from crime. However, crime in almost all categories is at its lowest in 10 years. As a rule, though, it’s still worth doing a
bit of research on the proposed area. You can look up the Crime statistics for your area streets in the Metropolitan Police (
  • You can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of a crime by taking sensible precautions and using common sense.

Popular choices of accommodation

Flat/House Shares

A popular choice is for students to get a group together and live as a single household, assuming full responsibility for a property.

We have an LCCM Accommodation Facebook group which is a good place to start looking for housemates and friends.

You may also find great accommodation through SpareRoom and Gumtree, just a couple of popular house finder websites that current LCCM students have used to find their homes away from home.

Residence Halls

There are several private, “all-inclusive” style residence halls in London, some within walking distance of our main building on Union Street. Although pricier than a house share, some of our students find the proximity to the college (and therefore reduced travel costs) and the amenities very attractive and convenient.

Some examples of these are:

Britannia South Bank

In a great zone 1 location, this boutique residence is just 3 minutes’ walk from Southwark (Jubilee Line), and 10 minutes walk from Borough (Northern Line) and Waterloo (Bakerloo, Northern, Jubilee, Waterloo and City Line) underground stations.
